Gus Brooks-Simpson is an artist born and raised in London who is of Jamaican descent, his work explores themes and concepts that humans have engaged with since conception.
Homecoming exhibition 2019
Having no formal education in the arts or literature beyond secondary/high school, Gus’s discipline is primarily self cultivated, wavering between a raw, expressive artform that leans heavily towards manga and graffiti and on the other hand taking his autodidactic studies of religion and culture, and, between these two worlds, striking a balance which produces an unusual style which captiavtes and at the same time expresses a deep inclination for contemplative thought regarding the themes and concepts that influence his work.
Gus at some point began to dub his work and, to some extent, himself under the name
BA KHEM ARTS or simply BA KHEM
Some of his older work can still be found sporting the BKA signature.
While embracing the evolution of his craft he abbreviated his name to signature his work alongside himself “GBS”, and established BKA as a creative dimension to further facilitate other creative endeavours.
The nature of Gus’s work is steeped in the same narrative that can be found within ancient mythologies and mythos, mankind dealing with their virtues and vices, ascending or descending to or from glory, and contemplation on ones self and the world.
